Australian Grocery Price Tracker

What does a comparable basket of groceries actually cost? We track published Australian supermarket basket research, calculate the gap between chains and turn it into household-level weekly, monthly and annual savings.

Latest national basket benchmark

The latest nationwide CHOICE fieldwork priced 17 comparable items at Aldi, Woolworths, Coles and IGA. The fieldwork was conducted in June 2026 across 104 supermarkets and published on 24 September 2026. We use the no-specials result as the tracker baseline because it makes the underlying shelf-price comparison clearer.

Aldi
$68.89
Cheapest basket
Woolworths
$74.47
$5.58 above Aldi
Coles
$76.79
$7.90 above Aldi
IGA
$92.69
$23.80 above Aldi

What that means: on this basket, Woolworths was $5.58 (8.1%) above Aldi and Coles was $7.90 (11.5%) above Aldi. IGA was $23.80 (34.5%) above Aldi, although independent IGA pricing varies substantially by store and state.

If you bought the same basket every week

Compared with AldiExtra per shopApprox. per month*Approx. per year
Woolworths$5.58$24.18$290.16
Coles$7.90$34.23$410.80
IGA$23.80$103.13$1,237.60

*Monthly figure uses 52 weeks ÷ 12. This is a comparison of this specific 17-item basket, not a prediction of your total grocery bill.

New South Wales snapshot

For NSW shoppers, the same survey's basket including available specials averaged:

SupermarketNSW basket
Aldi$68.76
Woolworths$74.28
Coles$75.96
IGA$88.98

This matters because national averages can hide state differences, particularly for fresh produce and independently priced IGA stores.

How we track grocery prices

This page is designed as a repeatable tracker, not a one-off claim about which supermarket is always cheapest. Our rules are:

  • Comparable baskets first. Pack sizes and product types need to be reasonably like-for-like.
  • Regular prices and specials are separated. A temporary promotion should not be presented as the normal shelf price.
  • Dates matter. Grocery prices move, especially fresh produce, so every dataset is dated.
  • Location matters. National and state results are labelled rather than mixed together.
  • Sources stay visible. We link to the underlying research and retailer information so readers can check our work.

As the tracker develops, we will add our own dated shelf-price snapshots for a fixed basket of staples. Retailer online prices can differ by location and from in-store prices, so those snapshots will be labelled separately from nationwide fieldwork.

Current direct-price spot checks

To test the repeatable methodology, we also check public retailer listings. In early October 2026, Aldi listed Farmdale full-cream milk 2L at $3.39, Bakers Life white sandwich bread 650g at $2.39, Lodge Farms cage eggs 700g at $5.00 and Imperial Grain basmati rice 1kg at $3.99. Coles listed its 2L full-cream milk at $3.40, Simply White sandwich loaf 650g at $2.50 and basmati rice 1kg at $4.00. These are spot checks, not a national basket, and location/availability can change.

Sources and verification

Next scheduled tracker review: November 2026, or earlier if a major supermarket pricing change materially affects the basket.
