About TheCostOfLiving.com.au
Australia\'s practical guide to cutting everyday costs — groceries, utilities, insurance, mobile plans and more.
What This Site Is
TheCostOfLiving.com.au is an independent Australian content site dedicated to one goal: helping everyday Australians spend less on the things they have to buy anyway.
We publish practical, regularly updated guides covering the biggest household expense categories — groceries, electricity and gas, mobile phone plans, insurance, banking, subscriptions, housing and transport. Every article is written specifically for the Australian market, referencing Australian brands, current Australian prices, and steps that actually work in 2026.
Why We Built This Site
Australia\'s cost of living has become a genuine crisis for millions of households. Energy bills, grocery prices, insurance premiums and rent have all risen sharply in recent years — but the practical advice available online is often outdated, generic, or written for overseas markets.
Sites like Canstar and Finder do an excellent job covering financial products — credit cards, home loans, bank accounts. But nobody was publishing detailed, hyper-Australian, how-to guides on the practical day-to-day decisions that determine whether a household budget works or doesn\'t. That\'s the gap we\'re filling.
How We Research Our Guides
Every article on this site is researched from current Australian sources before publication. We use:
- CHOICE Australia — for supermarket basket comparisons, insurance data and product testing
- Government tools — Energy Made Easy, Victorian Energy Compare, ACCC data
- Live price checking — Woolworths, Coles and Aldi websites, GrocerySpy, WhistleOut, Canstar
- ACCC and AER reports — for energy and telecommunications pricing
- State tenancy authority data — for rental and housing guides
We update articles when prices, products or regulations change. Every guide includes its most recent update date so you know how current the information is.
Our Approach to Recommendations
We only recommend products, services and strategies that we believe offer genuine value to Australian consumers. Where we have affiliate relationships with brands (see our Affiliate Disclaimer), we disclose this clearly. Our editorial recommendations are made independently — we do not accept payment to recommend specific products.
When a product or service we previously recommended changes for the worse — like Cashrewards, which shut down its cashback service in 2025 — we update our articles to reflect that, even when it means removing an affiliate link.
Who Runs This Site
