Updated 5 October 2026. Prices and promotions change frequently; use the framework below to compare the final checkout price rather than relying on a headline discount.
Takeaway has become noticeably more expensive. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that meals out and takeaway food prices were 4.1% higher over the year to August 2026, reflecting higher ingredient, operating and labour costs. The easiest response is not necessarily to stop ordering altogether — it is to make each order compete for your money.
1. Decide Your Takeaway Budget Before Opening an App
A weekly cap works better than trying to make a decision while hungry. If a household currently spends $80 a week and cuts that to $50, the difference is $1,560 a year. The target should be realistic enough that you can maintain it.
2. Compare Pickup, Direct Ordering and Delivery
Check the restaurant's own website or menu before ordering through a delivery platform. Compare the complete basket, including delivery fees, service fees and any minimum-order surcharge. Pickup can be substantially cheaper when the restaurant is nearby.
3. Use Promotions Only When They Beat Your Normal Choice
A discount is not a saving if it causes you to order more food or choose a more expensive restaurant. Compare the dollar amount you will actually pay. Keep a small list of local meals that reliably feed your household at a known price.
4. Make One Order Cover Two Meals
Meals that reheat well can reduce the cost per serve. Rice dishes, curries, pizza and some pasta meals often work better for this than foods that need to be eaten immediately. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and follow food-safety guidance.
5. Skip the Expensive Extras
Drinks, desserts and side dishes can turn a reasonably priced main meal into an expensive order. Keep drinks at home and add a supermarket side where practical. This is often easier than hunting for a coupon.
6. Track the Real Monthly Number
| Weekly takeaway spend | Approx. annual cost |
|---|---|
| $30 | $1,560 |
| $50 | $2,600 |
| $80 | $4,160 |
| $120 | $6,240 |
The annual number is useful because a small weekly change becomes meaningful over a year. Cutting $20 from a normal weekly order is worth about $1,040 annually.
